The Ilkley Pages Accommodation List
Ilkley has long been a popular resort. Since the Victorian era, when it was a spa and many visitors came to sample the curative baths, the town has been a stylish centre. The town's elegant Victorian buildings were constructed during its spa period and still house many of the hotels and guest houses.
Now holiday-makers come for high-class shops and restaurants and for the peaceful atmosphere. Ilkley has a splendid 'country town' feel to it and the many walks in and around the town and moor appeal to those planning to take a walking holiday. In addition, the many cultural activities which take place at various venues in the town provide entertainment throughout the year.
Some have likened it to the sound of a helicopter landing, others to British Gas undertaking major repairs to underground pipes. But the strange thundering noise which occurs on the moor on a particular night in spring has no ordinary explanation, for the phenomenon is caused by migrating frogs. They come each year to the tarn in the gardens of the Cow and Calf Hotel. Hundreds of the creatures stampede the moor and road, oblivious to the danger of traffic. The curious event is best witnessed from the Cow and Calf Rocks and Hotel and has become a major attraction for amateur naturalists.
